Exhibitor Spotlight: Applied Polymer Systems

Applied Polymer Systems (APS) was founded in 1997, in Southeast Alaska to provide advanced polymer service to the mining industry. In 1998, APS expanded into stormwater and construction industries.  APS was successful in filling a niche by using a unique method of precise polymer blending to match each specific application.

APS is the manufacturer of Floc Log, Silt Stop and Pond Log products. APS products are made with anionic polyacrylamide and are site specific so testing is needed to determine the best product for the site to ensure success. APS products are toxicity tested by a third party EPA certified laboratory and are safe for use in the environment.

Silt Stop Powder and Emulsion are used as tackifiers, soil stabilizers and in demucking. Powders can be applied either dry or with a hydroseeder. Emulsion is applied with a hydroseeder. Floc Logs are used to clarify turbid water in stormwater applications, dewatering applications and tank systems. Pond Logs are used in conjunction with floating fountains, aerators and waterfalls to control nutrients and turbidity.

APS products have been tested by universities, water management districts and DOT groups who have proven them to work well and be safe for the environment.

In addition to mass destruction of buildings and infrastructure hurricanes can cause devastating erosion which leads to the sedimentation of lakes, rivers and streams in the surrounding areas. After Hurricane Dennis destroyed a 14 miles section of Highway 98 in Florida’s panhandle in 2005, the Florida Department of Transportation consulted with Applied Polymer Systems to find a cost effect way to rebuild the heavily traveled Highway. APS created a simple, cost effective countermeasure to successfully rebuild the Highway 98 roadside. Using compost, jute matting, site specific Silt Stop Powder and Bermuda sod, a highly erosion resistant matrix was formed to create structural support for vegetation to be established. More than a year after the installation was complete, the roadside maintained its structural integrity; it survived a Category 1 hurricane and a tropical depression. The level of performance of this soft armoring application far surpassed the expectations of the FDOT.
